Getting Around Manukau

If you are arriving by air, then there are various options for getting to your location.  There are several shuttle and bus operators working Auckland Airport; for details, click here.

From 15 June 2008, Pacific Tourways will operate bus service no. 380 to & from Auckland Airport and Manukau city centre.  This half hourly service will enable fast connections to InterCity buses at Manukau.  A timetable can be obtained from Maxx, Auckland's public transport provider.

Manukau Transport Options

Manukau Ferries
One of the best things about staying in Manukau is that you can avoid the Auckland traffic.  Travel by ferry into downtown Auckland from either Pine Harbour or Half Moon Bay.  Take a ferry to Waiheke Island. Ferry timetables can be downloaded here.

Manukau Tours
A good choice of group and personalised tours is available.  Many of our operators are small and will give you a very personal welcome.  They will meet you at the airport, help you settle in and get oriented.  It need not be expensive - indeed they help you to get the best from your holiday, maximise your time, save you money, save you hassle of driving on unfamiliar roads and reading the map when you should be relaxing and enjoying yourself. Our tour operators also know all the special places.

Car or Campervan hire
With Auckland Airport on the doorstep and Auckland City within easy reach, there are plenty of options to choose from - pick up a rental car for a few days and travel around.  Manukau is an excellent base for exploring a little further afield.

Cycling in Manukau

To help you find your way around, you can use the following Regional Cycle Map –

South Auckland Cycle Map

This map indicates where all the following features are in our region –

  • Bus lanes (these can also be used by cyclists)
  • On road cycle lanes
  • Off-road sealed paths for cyclists
  • Off-road unsealed paths for cyclists
  • Shared footpaths, for cyclists to share with pedestrians

The map also shows where proposed routes are for future development – in these locations, funding is already committed to build cycle routes, and these will be built in the coming months.

Some ‘popular routes’ are shown – these are routes that are widely used by experienced training cyclists and/or cycle tourists. Some of these can be quite challenging – we recommend a good level of cycle competence before trying out some of these routes. However, they can be some of the best ways to get out and enjoy the region.

Mountain biking is, of course, very popular.  Auckland Regional Council parks have a guide to where this is available in Council parks.

All train stations and major bus stations are indicated on the maps – many of these have dedicated cycle facilities, and cycles can be taken on trains (except during peak times). Why not take your bike on a train ride and check out a part of the region you don’t yet know? Don’t forget your picnic, plenty of water, and some sun-block.
