Manukau Heritage & Culture

Manukau is an area steeped in cultural heritage - the historic heartland of New Zealand.  Māori people have lived in the Manukau area since 850 AD.  The second wave of migration occurred around 1350 AD with the arrival of the Tanui waka on the Manukau harbour.  Mangere Mountain and Otuataua Stonefields are locations of deep cultural significance.

Throughout Manukau there are many places of historic interest relating to the various stages of its colonisation by both Māori and European settlers.  Nowadays Manukau is home to over 165 different ethnic groups all of whom, over time, will leave a little piece of their history and culture in Manukau.

The recently unveiled Pou Kapua, standing adjacent to the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau City, tells the stories of migration to the land of Aotearoa.

Hikoi Pakuranga promotes the understanding of local iwi and history. Ideal for anyone interested in local heritage.
