For Te Wai o Hua people the mountain remains a place of spiritual significance. It is known as Te Pane o Mataoho, 'the head of Mataoho', Mataoho is the demi-god of volcanoes. Erupting about 18,000 years ago, the summit is 106 metres above sea level and offers amazing views of Manukau Harbour.

Mangere Gateway, where we welcome the world

Bordering, the ever-changing waters of the Manukau, the Mangere Gateway Heritage area lies sandwiched between Auckland City in the north and Auckland Airport in the south.

At its heart is Mangere Mountain, one of the best preserved examples of Auckland's volcanic cones and craters. From the summit you look out over the Manukau Harbour and the ancient lands of Ihumatao.

It is an area rich in cultural heritage. One of the few areas of Auckland left which offers continuity of people and place.

It is a place where Aucklanders go to discover more about themselves, and to celebrate their identity.

It is a place where visitors experience a unique mix of New Zealand - the old and the new, the urban and the rural, legend and living culture.
