Umupuia Beach
Aptly named the Pohutukawa Coast, the roadside is lined with native New Zealand Pohutukawa. In the summer months the trees erupt with masses of brilliant red flowers making this one of the most picturesque drives in Auckland. The coves, sheltered at the base of the hillside, are great for beachcombing and there is no shortage of perfect swimming spots. Umupuia is also known as Duder’s Beach after the Duder family who have farmed the area since 1866. As the homeland of the Ngai Tai tribe, many of the original settlement sites are still visible.
