Pōhutukawa Coast
Just 45 minutes from Auckland International Airport, the hills and valleys of Clevedon roll down to the coastline of the Hauraki Gulf. The tiny village of Whitford denotes the start of the Pōhutukawa Coast Trail -start your tour here.
Following the coastline around to Pine Harbour Marina, where you can take the ferry to Auckland or out to one of the Islands. Whatever your travel itinerary, the marina is worth a visit to watch the 'comings and goings' of the many privately owned, and often very expensive, boats and yachts.
Continuing along the coast brings you to Maraetai, meaning 'meeting place by the sea'. At dawn, there is a profound sense of peace and tranquility - and if you're lucky, you might experience the beautiful sunrise. There's plenty of farmstay or bed and breakfast accommodation in the area, or you can pitch tent at Omana Regional Park. Travel the rest of the Trail here.
At Umupuia, the road passes Duder's Regional Park, along the beautiful coastline, before turning inland towards the main village of Clevedon - the genuine country experience! Lush green valleys dotted with boutique vineyards, lifestyle blocks and country activities.
Clevedon village is fast gaining a reputation for its food, wine and specialty shops, as well as having a number of vineyards in the immediate area. These are mainly open weekends or by appointment.
Whilst imagining yourself in another world, turn a corner on one of the hills, and you'll get a spectacular view of Auckland City and the Sky Tower in the distance, reminding you that this tranquil area is so close to New Zealand's largest urban area.
